Project 2.$a, involving radioactive fallout stuiies conducted

ty the U.S, Naval Radiological Defence Laboratory, received heavy and
exacting support from the teek group.

Two ATFs, APACHE ani SIOUX, were

exployed almost fall time in the Project.

It was their task to lay free

floating den buoys equipped os fallout ecliectors dowmrind froma the
detonation point outside the lagoon, than relocate thes after the shot
and recover thea,

In case of a shot postponeent it nas necessary that-

the buoys be recovered, serviced ant replanted, iunediately if the postponent was a brief one,

ith the grest number of poctponencita that

occurred in CASTLE this task became a heavy one.

Sven though the buoys

were eqaipped with special radio trensnitters, ani the ATFs with special
radioc direction finder equipment, the bucys were hard to locate, The
adie aignal eaitted by the buoys weekencd greatly after several hours

in the water, axt was not of vary great assietamein the hunt, Vi-29
eiroreft ani the security DDE ware often called upon to help ia the
search when they could te spared froa other, sore pressing duties.

Once Located, the buoys were hard to handle in the rough seas. Ths

handiing problem was made more difficult by the design of the antennas
that projected from the tops of the buoys; shaped like short usbrells
spokes the antennae endangered the eyes of persomal hendling the

buoys and were thenselves easily damaged. Fallout studies inside the
lagoon were made by means of raft-barne collectors.

A crene-ejuipped
