By a mencrantum to the Seeretary of the Havy dated 16 May 1947 the Joint Chiefs ef Staff rejuested that a selentific resurvey of Bikini Atoll be undertaken by the Navy Depertaent during the sumer of 1947 in order to oom- plete studies and projects begun in 1946 in connection sith Gperation Crossracds. In a separate memorandum to the Seo-. retary of Bar, the Bar Departaent was requested te cooper ate in this resurvey end te furnish such facilities and | personnel es might be needed and could be made available. | BEST COPY AVAILABLE Technical supervision of the project was assigned to the Joint Crosasroeds Committee and its successor orgenizstion. Ze : os Ins acoordance with this request ef the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chief of Naval Operations on 2 June 1947 directed the various bureaus and offices ef the Navy Departaent to make arrangements for the resurvey end assigned operational eontrel to the mander-in-Chief, Pacific Flest. Three vessels have been sade available for the expedition; a large Attack Transport (058 CHILTON APA-38), a Submarine Rescue Vessel eapebdle of deep diving operations (USS COUCAL - ASB-8), and a Landing Graft, Infantry (LCIL-615). A target date of 15 duly 1947 for commencing operations at Bikini Atoll is proposed. It is contemplated that the work at Bikini will occupy « period of six weeks. — - 3.
