According to a General Accounting Office (GAO) report
the cleanup of
Enewetak Atoll, the DOE has the responsibility for future periodic radiological surveys
of Enewetak Atoll and periodic medical and environmental monitofing of the people
and the environment after rehabilitation.

(There is no official agreement between

the U.S. and the people of Enewetak regarding these miattfrs.)

The GAO

recommendsestablishing an agreement to monitor and inspect ent@mbed radioactive
soil and debris rojowing the termination of the T.T. agreement. Tha GAO advises the
DOIto initiate indepen ent assessment of the Enewetak cleanup pr@ject, a suggestion

agreeable to the DOE.**
