FOR OPERATION “SANDSTONE!’

On 23 October 1947 M.

Louis A. HoPkins, Jr., of the Sandia Base

Branch, Los Qamos Scientific Laboratow was appointed to act in a
liaison capacity in communicationmatters between J-Ditision of the
Laboratory and the Armed Forces during the planning and operational
phases of Operation Wandstone.lt The duties of the Comnun~cations
Section, LOS Qmos

J-1.l(LAJ-11),were considered to be:

(1) Coordinatethe communicationsrequirementsof J-Division
with the CommunicationsSection, Joint Task Force
NSwitchmanll
(later, Joint Task Force Seven);
(2) Coordinatethe AEC communicationfacilitiesin the United
States with the Azmed Forces;
(3) Advise the Scientific Director in matters relating to
operations and communications;
(4) Keep the Scientific Director informed as to the status
and operations of the communication system provided by
the task force.
on7 January 1948 Lieutenant Colonel John P. 5croggs, Signal
Corps, USA, of the jsth Engineer Battalion was chosen to aid Hr.
Hopkins with this assignment. Lt Col Scroggst primary assignment
was the planning and supervisionof Atomic Energy Commissionmessage
handling procedures and facilities.
