DAILY INTELLIGENCE ABSTRACYS NO. 131.
1. ATOMIC ENERGY, The British UN delegation has indicated that the UA
"strongly prefers ‘once and for all! action" in connection with the US
proposal for a UN etndy of the harmful effects of atomic radiation.
The UK would like to have the UN Secretary General appoint a group
of distinguished scientists, after consultation with an advisory committee consisting of the US, UK, USSR and "perhaps" France, the delegation
indicated,

2. ITALY. The city of Genoa is to present a iarge statue of Christopher
Columbus to the city of Columbus, Ohio, on Octcver 9, according to USIS
Rome.
Ambassador Luce has been invited to take part in the ceremonies
and has expressed an interest in taking to Columbus the "president,
secretary or delegated representative of each cf the four Italian center
parties under the broadest possible interpretation and quickest possible
application of the leader grant procedure",

INDIA.

The Indian tinister of Food and Agriculture has stated that
demage in the flood areas of India is great, with many villages dastroyed
and that food grains, clothing and medicine are needed. Ambassador Cooper
in New Delhi comments that he expects India to ask officially for US
assistance, In the meantime, the Ambassador recommends that the US Red
Crosse be approached to inguire of the Indian Red Cross if help is desired.
If the US Red Cross or Government decides to give aid, it is necessary
that deliveries be made promptly to be effective and to have maximum

JAPAN.
Ambassador Allison suggests that the forthcoming release of
Japanese War Criminals be rescheduled to coincide with Foreign Minister
Shigemitsu's visit to Washington.
The present release date, which
coincided with the anniversary of Japan's formal surrender (Sept, 2),
"may lead the Japanese to expect further substantial releases on other
significent anniversaries."
