COMPARISON WITH TOTAL BETA YIELD
It is possible to compare the total fallout observed during
the Castle series with the smount of beta activity produced.
Assuming the relationships between fission yield and total beta
activity given in The Effects of Atomic Weapons (lh, p. 251) is
valid, the beta activity in thefission products from a nominal
bomb (20 kt) 18 approximately 266 megacuries aftergne day. Using
the fission yields given in Table 2.1, and the t7*°*
law, the totel
beta activity produced in the Castle is shown in Table 3. 1.

A comparison of the observed fallout from the first two events
and from the series ss a whole with the total produced is shown in
table 3.2.
The remaining events are not shown individually since
the intervals between bursts were too short to adequately differentiate
the debris for this purpose.
