On 28 May at 1620 Lt. Miliotes was infomied tiat someone was interested in
finding out Rad Safe tolerances for alpha radiatione He was instructed to call
Col. Pinson at a Fred nunber.
Lt. Miliotes talked to the colonel for several minutes and gave him the
following information:
1)
Contaminated surface - 500 cpm or more.
2)
air contamination €d/m/n? air.
3)
Wear respirator if in doubt.

He did not know the figures for total body burden.

He would help if they wanted him to monitor the equipment that was
contaminated.

Col. Pinson remarked that he was ~oinz to nonitor the aircraft himself and
that no helo was needed. He wanted to know how larze an area shoul¢ be swiped for
a swipe sanple. Lt. Miliotes could not satisfy him on this point or on the point
as to what constituted a total body burden for alpha.
The colonel said he would
try other sources for the uransvwered questions.
It should be omohasized at this tine that this is the only time that TU-7
was officially called in on this cuestion. Sverythins that follows in this re dort

On 29 Hay, Ur. Cy Schlaer of LasL care in and said 4 t™:t he had heard that
T 7.4 was having a big probdlem with alnha contaminated a aircraft anf that they
may need help.
Lt. Ryan called Capt. Wichols at TG 7. and he was told that they
cot reacines of 500 cpm and 1500 cpm off swipes on the aircraft.
saic he was satisfied with these readings and was not worried.

A little later that morning Lt. Jameson, TG 7.4 Rad Safe, called an? said that
they were considering taldn7™ urine samples from the peovle ex>dosed to these aircraft.
He wanted to know if TU-7 could vrocess them. He w2s told that T-7 did not have
the facilities for this but that the sarvles could be se~t to LASL and >rocessed
there.
This was finally dropped when Capt. Nichols decided that no urine sarmoles
will be takene
At about 1300 on 29 May, I. William Kennedy of H Divisicn, LASL, came to TU-7
ane said that he had heard various rumors about alvha contaminated wircraft. AL
this time he offered his help as an advisor if needed. He called Col. Pinson but
was unable to reach him. Ye finally talked to Lt. Jameson. After the phone conversation Mr. Kennedy said that he was satisfied that there was very little to worry
about.
