56. CTG 7.3 has made a detailed report of the conditou of the bikini buoyare system to the Navy Hydrographic Office for refer= ence use in preparing the lagoon for future oper:tions. 57- cConsider..ble time ond expense went inte the provision of ade:juate mooring buoys at both atolle, particularly at Mkini. There a fall set of small craft moorings was plenied vefore the spsration began, along with three telephona equipped large chip scoring buoys. During the operctional period the small craft moorinss rere put te full use, in fact sore af them would not have heen eniss. f Up until the first shot the large buoys at Bikini vere used regularly by RELLE GROVE and BAIROND, and by ESTZS when she was at Bikini. After BRAVO little use was made of the telephone buoys. The telephone e.aipment was rendered inoperative by the shot, and the frequent esortics and unsbhedulod movenents to which the large ships were subject made snchoring more practical then mooring. AN/TRO radio telephone equip= ment and other voice radio circuits effectively substituted for the loss of the telephone systen, except that they lecked the security of the telephone systwx. The large diip scorincs at Enivetok vere little used since after BaVO the shipa were seldom there lous enough to warrant mocring. The in-ort DOK at Sxivetcsk was the princi ral user of the telephons buoys there, regularly mooring to one off Enle wetok island. (|
