Plans for the next five years include anaval surveys wiich will gqeraily
be reduced in scepe and uuaber of participating pergumael. This ia
peasible tor the follewing resasons:
(1) Certain types of euaninuations
may now be done less f{requentiy then on a yeasly desks; (2) Meee Seo
rate and rapid actheds of eumination have been developed; (3) with
secent iaprevenent in instrumentation the nunber of specially trained
tectnicians required is rewced.
In addition, by altemating major
prograus, individual surveys uay be reduced in ecege.
It ig wmilikely
that teams as large as have been used in past surcveys whdl be seeded
in the future. This reduction in size ef individual guirveys does net
secessarily preclude considerable post-survey axaxinations of sauples
returned from the field wich will scaupy the time and effort of a
mmber of scicatists at varieus institutions. It gdionld be pointed
qut that the number of personnel actually involved in the surveys at
Somgelap bag represented a geall ceuponent of the ausbes of acientists
amd technicians who have contributed te the sirveys in the laboratories
ia the United States. Sy far the greatest past of the werk connected
vith the survey coces in the past<survey period, such as conpdlation
and statistical analysis ef data, particularly ef the grewth end
meat meagurenests in children and games epectography data, both of which
cequirce the aid of statisticians and seny hours of computer analysis;
waciochert cal analyses of urine samples; taterpretation of x-rays,
electrocarctiegrang and audiograag; developing and cempilation ef dear
mentary phetorrapAs; the completion end duplication ef all clinical
records; etc. Certain studies that axe carried out in the labosatories
in the United States may net appear on first consideration to be
@ivectly related to rediation effect. Por exanple, studies are
carried out from arall aliquots ef bleed fer deternination ef bleed
groups and gemetically inherited characteristics. Such studies ace
Ampertant in agsessing the honogaeity of the population uncer study
and in obtaining baseline genctic data, wiich infemmtion is of vital
importance in interpreting other observations. The scientific valua
of these stucies is secondary te their value in evalusting sdiation
effects in the expesed people. Therefore, any inference that the
Marahallese peeple are being used as Zuinen pigs because ef guch
studies ig completely unjuatified.
Details of the March 1960 survey have bean worked cut with Or. Mace
donald. The gurvey will tavelye only a brief emmusination of the
@xpesed Rongelapese including one NOC and differestiai cout. A
limited number of urine samples will be cpllected fez cadiecheslcal
malyons. it is anticipated that this survey will require only 4 te
§ days at Nongelap. The several exposed Acngelap people residing Ot
Boeye and Majuro will sige be examined at their reapestive islands.
