TIC (Tacnnical Information Centar: scuntry of Fiubliication: United States eere Locations United States Abstract: This repert summarizes all available data on the cencentrations of radionuclides in fisn frem Bikini Atoll between 1977 and 17384, As “cund in ether global studies, /sup 137/Cs is most highly accumulated in edible flesh cf all species of fish, the lowest fractions ere found in the bone or liver. The mean concentraticn of /sup 137/Cs in muscle of reef fish fram the southern part of the atoll is comparable tc the glcabai fallout concentration measured in market samples cf fish collected from Chicagc, Tliineis, in 1988. /sup 90/Sr is generally assceciated with non-edible parts ef fish, such as bone or viscera. Twenty-five to fifty percent cf the total bedy burden cf /sup $0/Ca is accumulated in the muscle tissue; the remainder is distributed among the liver, skin, and viscera. The mean concentration of /sup 50/Co in fish has been decreasing at a rate faster than radiological decay alore. Most striking is the range of /sup 207/Bi concentrations among different species of fish collected at the same time and place. Highest concentrations of /sup 207/Ei were consistently detected in the muscle (and ather tissues) zf goatfish and sore cf the pelagiz= lagoon fish. In ather reef fish, such as mullet, surgeonfish, and Parritfish, /Sup 207/Bi was usually below detection limits by gamma 5004609
