subject:

ENIWETOK RADIOLOGICAL SURVEY

Purpose:

To inform the Commission of current activi(Yes Oth. Kees
Eniwetok Atoll and of related historical and OE
data.

Discussion:

In connection with the announced intention of the

United States to return Eniwetok Atoll to the Trust
Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), the
Department of Interior (DOL), Department of
Defense (DOD), and AEC have developed a comprehensive
and coordinated program to carry out the necessary
survey, cleanup, and rehabilitation efforts to
permit future resettlement of the atoll by the
Eniwetok people.
Eniwetok Atoll was designated a nuclear testing site
in 1947 and used for such purpose from 1948 through
1958. The last of 43 tests was conducted in
July 1958, and all tests have been listed publicly.
In early 1948, the Eniwetok people (original
number:

136; now:

432) were relocated to Ujelang

Atoll where they still reside.

AEC is responsible for conducting a radiological
survey, assessing the results, and establishing
criteria and constraints for cleanup and rehabilitation,

involving other agencies, as appropriate. Within
Headquarters, DBER, DOS, and AGMMA are each
responsible for specific parts of this overall AEC
responsibility. In the field, NVO is responsible
for conducting the radiological survey with the
support of laboratory and contractor personnel.
Examples of the complex radiological situation
existing on Eniwetok are provided.
