b. General:
Early in December 1952, a yreat deal of difficulty was
encountered with leaking POL storage tanks, resulting in the loss of
gasoline and other fuels,

Recommendations for necessary repairs and

replaccnent of unserviccable tanks werc made to CJT SEVEN and to the
AEC Resident Engineer,

These recommendations were approved and AEC

issucd a scrics of work orders to Holmes & Narver for necessary ccon=

struction an repairs,

lerk began in Sepucmber 1953 and by late Feb-

ruary 1764, cight new 1000 barrel vertical storage tanks and four
new 150 gallon per minute pusips hed been installed, the cntire piping
system had been changed

and a third submarine pipeline had been laid.

With the stepped-up program of the operetional phase, it
was necessary to augnont the POL Section with seven enlisted men to
accomplish a 24-hour issuo schedule,

As fucl requircments for CASTLE became known, it was determined that the base storece facilities would not be adcquates

therefore became necessary to utilize offshore fuel storage consisting

ef one YOGN and one YOG (both gasoline barges), and one YO (fuel oil
barge).

These added stcrrge facilities insured ample fuel supplies,
With tha conclusion of Operation CASTLE fuel requirenents

dropped to normal, Therefore;the offshore fuel storage facilitics
were roleased to their naval commands.
