WHITE, 5-7 MARCH 1954 Earth samples wore collected as follows: 4t cach island visitcd soveral samples were dug and put into the same one-gallon "ac-crceam carton", Each samplo (isc. cach digging) epproximtcd on: squaro foot to a depth of one inch. The number and locations of the samples we: selected to represent, as well as could be judged, an averege of the arcas uscd by the inhabitants, after the samples were mixcd in the carton. Arcas that wer: unusually shaded or unshaded by trocs were avoided. The large "pebbles" in tho composite represent coral gravel from "main strect" through the village.
