1iI. oceanographicsurvey. This program was designed to

follow the distribution of radieactivity in water, plankton end fish
following a Kardtack event. Hydrographic data to accompany the radic-

biclogical data were prowided by GHR and the Hydrographic Office.

Sea water monitoring was carried on by the Raval Medical Research
Institute and was supported by an AK contract. All of the objectives
were not attained because of contamination from other tasts both before

and after the event being studied.

The Kehoboth is « Hydrographic

C£fice vessel.

:

The Collete survey was of the

restricted area“established “for the Sardtack series. As the Hardtack
program in the Pacifie came te an wnexpacted early clese the plans

for the post test survey were moved forward nearly a month. Informetion on the radioactivity of plankton sad of water by depth and by
station was radiced from ship tc inivetok and relayed te Gordons

Duming for the ewalwation of harvard.

In general, the ectivrity

increased from southeast te northwest, the levels of highest activity
being found north of Bikini and Enivetck snd somewhat te the west.
The Collete is a U.&8. Reavy Destroyer.

Silverstein oceanographic suryey.

The Silverstein survey wes an

extension of the Collete survey from the restricted area westward te
Cuan, a distance of about 1100 miles from the Facific Test Site. in
addition te collecting samples of water, plankton and fish, work
aboard ship included bate counting end game ray spectroscopy of &
lietted aumber of semples. The levels of radioactivity were sintler
to the levels observed im the 195¢ Marah survey that was aede at

relatively the same times in relatios te the tasting pexiod. fovever,
in 1$58 radieactive suuples were collected somewhat farther to the
westverd. A "hot spot” thet was observed during the Collete survey
was believed to have been observed during the Silversteie survey 30
days later at « point 240 afles farther to the veetwerd, a rate of
advance of about 7.3 wiles per day. The Silverstein is a U. 5. Havy
destroyer.

Vi. Off teat-gtte atol}s. In addition te samples from Enivetok,
Fikini and Rengelap sawplee of natural food items have been obtained
at outlying atclis where weather stations had been established.
These include Wotho, Eapingamerangi, Ujelang, Fenape, Utirik and
Tarawa. From these samples inforeation, either pesitive or negative,

on the geographical distribution cf falleut may be obtained.
