Therapy
One
Qne of the best weys of maintaining rappert vith the Marshallese
ie by medical and surgical therapy. In the past, particularly when the
people wese living at Majuro where hospital facilities were available,
s@dical and surgical procedures carried out by our team were greatly
appreciated by the people. Under the limited facilitias at Rongelap,
auch procedures are necessarily limited in scope.
Hewever, every effort
mist be made to expand this aspect of our operation. Therefore, careful
cenalderation must be given to therapeutic procedures that may be carried
ent such ag medical, minor gurgesy, dental, etc.

Hematological.
It ig anticipated that two complete blood counts
will be done on each individual about a week spart. The first count will
be done by venipuncture with enough bloed drawa (25~30 ml) for carrying
out other procedures to be outlined below. The seconc counts will be
frou finger gticks. These routine ceukts will include WBC, Differential,
Platelet count, 25C, and iiemoglobin. At the time of the first count, the
fellowing tests mey also be done; reticulocyte counts, Price-Jones
curves, cOverslip smears for alkaline phosphatage determinations (by
Ds. Malone in Boston) anc extra gears for bagophile counts of 4000 celis
(to be done later at BNL). (Bilebed lymphecytes?} with the second count,
aedigentation rates may be done en those with high NiCs.
A Coulter electronic counter will be used fer WBC, RIC and, if
the technique is worked cut in tims, for platelets. This davice gives
greater accuracy than visual cowiting and is quite a time saver. Pipettes
and counting chambers will be taken should it be necessary to use the
wisual technique.
Phase micrescopy would then be used for platelet
counts. The microhematecrit technique will be used fer hematocrits.
Hemoglobin - (Lunmetran (7) Coleman (7) Other (7) Cresel biue staining
for reticulocytes.
The Health Aide has been requested to give about 34 people
one 5 grain tablet of ferreus quifate daily wtil our arrival. Cane
perisos of RBCs and heneglobins in this group with these not treated
may indicate whether iren deficinecy is a factor in their lowered
hematocrits.
