Inasmuch aes the President's announcement was not issued until mid-August and in view of the time required to survey the islands following me announcement to develop preliminary cost data, it was not hitherto possible to reflect the Bikini program reouirements edcequately or accurately in the re 197° program or budzet justifications. * - Following the August-September survey trio the Atomic Enercy Commission th s worked up estimates of the cost of clearing the islands of debris and scrub vegetation and the Trust Territory developed estimates for replanting, redevelopment ond resettlement. ™~ Cleanup costs are cstimated to te $1 ,200 ,000 and it is Turcheor estimated that the cleanup joo could oe completed within a six-month Detaile Pa voricd after funds are made available. estimates are attached, RedeveLovncnt costs are estimated to total $2,752,000 over a five-ycar vericd. the bULK OF the redevelopment expense is encountered in the first year of new consvuruction.
