Recently, as a result of concerns over the doses received by participants at CROSSROADS, Senator Cranston asked the General Accounting Office to investigate alleged improprieties or deficiencies associated with CROSSROADS records, dosimetry, and dose reconstructions. The investigation, completed in 1985 (21), did not assess the methodology used to calculate radiation doses, but nonetheless concluded that film badge dosimetry, personnel decontamination procedures, and contaminant ingestion could have led in some instances to higher doses than were reported. Regardless, even if doses were higher as alleged, they would not have exceeded established standards for radiation exposure. 175
