A —_ we fs — NCLASSiep Chapter 6 RECOMMENDATIONS er 61 FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION The results indicate tha possibility of widespread disruption ; A Ey eo ae Oe a 6 of . of radio commmications due to absorption, presumably caused by windborne radioactive material at high altitudes. The lateral extent of this effect is still unknown. It is therefore recommended that, during future large-scale tests, experiments be performed to more accurately locate the bouridaries and motion of the material causing the absorption. Such experiments eeuld be carried out with an airborne ionosphere recorder. Data so obtained, combined with data taken concurrently at suitably located ground stations, would also be of great value in gaining a more complete picture of the convection resulting from large blasts and of the associated ionic motions. oe 6.2 COMPREHENSIVE DATA ANALYSIS woo. . Many of the phenomena observed during Operations IVY and CASTILE are similar to effects that usually accompany ionospheric storms. It is therefcre recommended that a comprehensive study be made of the ‘> data already obtained in combination with related data from futura tests. Such a study should lead to a more complete understanding of oe 6.3 ae the processes involved in naturally caused phenomena. CONTINUED STUDY OF DISTANT DATA It is recommended that ionosphere records at distant locations continue to be examined for evidence of traveling lonosphsric disturb- ri abe ances initiated by large explosions. Data on the velocity of prop~ agation of such disturbances in different directions from a know source cannot be obtained by any other means. ‘
