AMERICAN SAMOA
American Samoa's seven islands have a land area of 76.
Square miles and are about 4,100 miles from the U.S. mainland.
Over 96 percent of the land is owned communally.
American
Samoa's population is about 34,000.
In 1982, 38 percent of the
work force was employed by the local government.
The largest
private sector activity, tuna canneries, comprised 22 percent of
total employment.

with the majority living on the largest island, Saipan.

had a per capita income estimated to be at least $2,700 in
1979.
The economy mostly depends on government employment.
More than 30 percent of its work force of 6,000 was engaged in
