SUBJECT:
Preservation of Research Wells, Runit
There are approximately ten research wells located around the
cactus crater, as shown on the attached sketch, that are to be
preserved for further research after the crater containment
operations have been completed. It has been brought to our
-attention that it may be necessary to level much of the area
around these wells to make a work area for equipment operations.
In addition, a few of the wells may be covered with sail-cement
and concrete cap if the containment area is extended out over
the land surface.
Your support is requested in the preservation of these wells.
In discussions with members of your staff and the staff of the
84th Engineers’ Bn. it appears that the following actions are
necessary:
(a)
Survey and monument the well locations.
(b)
In areas that are to be leveled, the well casings
are to be cut off and capped approximately 18"
below the surface of the leveled work area.
(c)
If it appears that the containment will be extended over the wells we would like to have the
well casings extended up through the material
and the concrete cap. If this becomes necessary
we would like to review the method of extension
and effecting a seal between the casing and the
cap.
