The amount of rain water collected aboard the observation ship was mostly less than one liter for each ‘rain falle Therefore, water samples which were collected on closer dates and location were combined and the ses analyse were done on the composite samples. b) Methods of radiochemical analyses Water sample was evaporated to about 20 ml in a beaker. . After the solution was acidified with hydrochloric acid,, carriers of Fe, Sr, and Cs were added. pH of the selution was adjusted to 8 with ammonia solution to ‘separate iron hydroxide by filtration. Iron hydroxide was dissolved again with hydrochloric acid and the residue was digested twice with a small amount of diluted hydrochloric acid. The filtrate was combined and pH of the solution was adjusted again to 8 with ammonium hydroxide to separate iron hydroxide. After iron hydroxide was filtered, pH of the filtrate . . ipitat 9 with sodium carbonate to precip i : ° was adjusted to alkaline earth carbonate. After calcium was separate by using the funing nitric acid methoipid and bariun and geaiumore romver ss chromate precipitate, Sr ond 89Sr were counted. Nitric acid was added to the filtrate from the carbonate and 157Cs was separated by the addition of solid ammonium molybdophosphate. 137Cs was counted with a r ray spectrometcr.
