As you are no doubt aware, the SEAREX“Field Program in

reached its conclusion. Analysis of both air and rain samples collected there.
VP
have now begun and we have every reason to believe that the program based “At
Sand Island was a success.
It is not to soon however, for the SEAREX Program members to start weitf

about the American Samoa Field Experiment which will begin in November 1980

As was the case in Enewetak, there are some "tough nuts to crack" in American
Samoa. Not the least of our problems will be the housing of at least fourteen
scientists as well as a few of the families of those scientists who will be
there for longer periods of time.
It is our hope that perhaps the possibility
of procuring government housing exists near the village of Pago Pago.
If
government housing is not possible, we would be interested in investigating
the options of house and apartment rentals.
Another problem which we are up against once again is the lack of adequate
electrical power at the sampling site located at the NOAA GMCC Station on
Cape Matatula. At present, we are thinking of re-using as much of our Enewetak
submarine cable as is practical. However, not having been to the sampling site
yet, the solution to this problem is not yet in focus.

Best regards,

AwOLISOSSU

Thank you for your cooperation.

NOWIATION

As I mentioned during the meeting with you, Bill Stanley, and Don Brush in
Honolulu on 6 August, I plan on visiting American Samoa sometime in October. At
that time, if it is appropriate, I would like to speak with you further with
regards to these problems. Any help you might be able to give toward the
solution of these problems would be greatly appreciated.
