East German government began

construction of Berlin Wall, which
closed all land routes between East and
West Berlin.
Soviet Union broke nuclear test
moratorium, and on October 23 and 30

fired shots estimated at thirty and
fifty megatons.

September 5, 1961

President Kennedy ordered resumption of
underground nuclear testing.

Nougat at the Nevada Test Site, firing
thirty-two shots.

As part of Nougat shot "Gname" the

first Peaceful Nuclear Explosion (as

part of Project Plowshare) was
detonated in a salt cavity in Carlsbad,
New Mexico.

President Kennedy authorized resumption

The Commission conducted Operation

of atmospheric nuclear weapon testing.
Dominic I in the Christmas Island and
Johnston Island areas of the Pacific.
This was the last U. S. atmospheric
test series.
