Marks ~ cof ny stats for AEC-comuents on a report of the Soecial Joint Comittee Concerning Rongeléep and Utirik Atolls of the Congress of Micronesia, The report provices docurtsatation supporting a request for compensaticzn for damases to the Rongelzp and Utirik Atolls and their inhabitants resulting from the tharmenuclear test conducted on Bikini Atoll on March 1, 1954, ¢ * 7 the report requests the following types of compensation:: - Briefly stated, 1. Payments of $50,000 each to the mother and father of the deceased leukemia pati ; . 3. -4, 90 cech to persons’ who have hed thyroid operations jon-in incuced disease; Q . 2. ° Payments O° because of r Payments of $1,000 each to the people of Utirik who were relocated subsecuent to the test; and . Funds of $25,000 annually for community purposes for each atoll: (Rongelso ana peer ts) in addition te the usual Grant Fund appropriations by the U. S. Congress. + In February 1950, leeal act fon was initiated on behalf of the inhabitants of Rongelep Atoll to seek compensation for damaces suffered as a conse-~ quence of the test. Although the suit was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction cf the court in the Trust Territory, the complaint was ‘considered to have merit by the United States Congress.
