S. Atomic Energy Commission and the Depart~ ment of Defense today announced that 15 U.S. newsmen have been selected to observe and report a megaton range nuclear detonation scheduled for about May 1, 1956 at the Com- mission's Eniwetok Proving Ground. A limited number of regional and state civil defense leaders also will be selected by the Federal Civil Defense Administration to observe the same detonation as a part of that agency's orientation and leadership program, and the U. S. Information Agency will have one representative present. In addition to the newsmen named as principals to cover the test, alternates were selected in the event of inability of any principal to attend. Those named are: Associated Press - Elton C. Fay, Washington Bureau; alternate, William H. Becker, Los Angeles Bureau. International News Service - Robert Considine, New York Bureau; alternate, James L. Kilgallen, New York Bureau.
