KEPNER: Subj: To Test Effectiveness of Geiger Counters in Planes Over Radioactive Site in New Mexicoe le It is requested arrangements be made for the 509th Air Force stationed at Roswell, New Hexico to provide a plane to carry Geiger counters over the radioactive crater region at the Alamagardo Test sitee 2e The plane which is to be used for such a mission should be slow flying and able to fly 100 feet or lower over the crater are&e A cub training plane would be satisfactory for the purpose indicated. Se The Geiger counter and personnel required for testing will be provided by Dr. James Nolan at Los Alamos laboratorye 4 If such a test is successful, this site would be suitable for the training of Army and Navy flying personnel of the Drone Units to familiarize them in the use of Geiger counters and to simulate condition at actual operation CROSSROADS.
