JMT Country of Origin: Australia (DOE contractor) Country of Publication: United States Abstract: The author presents a general oceanography of the northern Marshall Islands and then focuses on the oceanography of Eniwetok Lagoon. Frequent comparisons are made between Eniwetok and Bikini. Windward and leeward cross-reef currents, channel currents, and tidal flow are the major factors influencing the exchange of water between atoll lagoons and the surrounding ocean. Wind-driven circulation contributes primarily to internal circulation. Upwelling of the windward side of lagoons may occur but does not seem to be a generalized feature of deep lagoon circulation. Deep water flow appears to orient itself toward the channels of net water output.
