Whereas only a few years ago, most people were not concerned about the environment, recent public opinions show that 3/4 of the people in the US regard it as a primary concern that demands more attention than it is getting. Many have gone even farther in their thinking, to the point that they think we are in a serious environmental crisis. It is possible that the air of crisis is doing us a favor. It presents the people of all the Earth with the threat of a common danger. It is usually easier to elicit people’s cooperation in surprising degree of consensus that the problem is real, that we must change not only our ways of behaving but our ways of thinking about our world. There is also a feeling that we used both new policies and new leadership from the top to deal adequately with what faces us. All of this leads me to consider how we can use our space assets to improve our knowledge and equip us to deal with the environmental challenge. Mission to Planet Earth refers to a continuing study of the Earth from space. One of the principal points of this paper is that space is the place to gather most of the data we need to understand the EHarth for the first time in all its beauty, glory, and increasingly recognized vulnerability.
