Effects of Radiation The Division of Biology and Medicine, together with anfad hoc panel consisting of Dr. Austin M. Brues, Director of the Biology Division, Argonne National Laboratory; Dr. A. H. Dowdy Chairman, Department of Radiology, School of Medicine, Univergity ‘of California at Los Angeles; Dr. G. Failla, Professor of Radjobiology, Columbia University; Dr. J. %. Gowen, Professor of. Genetics, Iowa State College; Dr. L. D. Marinelli, Associate ‘Director, Health Physics Division, Argonne National Laboratory; and Dr. Stafford L. Warren, Dean, School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles, met in Washington on September and developed plans for increasing its investigation of the time effects of radiations. e- Steps have been taken to initiatk work with laboratory animals such as mice, rats, anc dogs. It is fnti- Cipated that information obtained from these investigations on animals can be extrapolated to humans. - International Conference on Radiation Tolerances Under the technical cooperation program a conference held at Chalk River, Ontario, on September 29 and 30 between sentatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Can the purpose of establishing egreement as to permissible expo external radiation and to intemal radioactive emitters. The conferees attained agreement on tolerances for raqi plutonium, thorium, polonium, and strontium. Agreement was reacned on a formula for relating the amount of radioactive material wnich may be disseminated in a given area with the tion density of the area.
