DRAFT OUTLINE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT
This is in response to the DNA proposal of December 4, 1972,
for a joint AEC-DOD-DOI environmental statement to cover the restor-

ation of Eniwetok Atoll.
The AEC has considered the tentative environmental statement

outline and assignment of responsibilities for drafting particular
sections.
We recognize that the timing for availability of radiological

survey results and radiological assessments, will impose a delay
of several months before firm radiological cleanup assumptions can

be started.

However, it is suggested that much of the outcome of

the radiological survey and assessment could be postulated at this
time for the purposes of environmental statement drafting with the
idea that those postulated matters would be confirmed in the final
environmental statement.

On this basis, the AEC will initially

assume for the draft statement:
1.

that the radiological survey findings for radionuclides

of other than plutonium will be comparable to those
encountered at Bikini for similarly situated islands;
2.

that the radiological survey findings for plutonium will

not show serious contamination problems at locations
other than Runit (and possibly Engebi) Islands;
