tion HARDTACK, we considered advancing certain shots now planned
for Operation MILLRACE in the fall of 1958 at the Nevada Test
Site.
In the interest of avoiding further venpethening of WARDTACK,
we are not recommending that they be advanced.
However , we do
reel that certain shcts in MILLRACE are oxtremel y important and
if for any reason Cveration MILLRACE is to be cancelled or postponed, the addition of the MILL&ACE shots tu Operation HARDTACK
Should be considered further, and fabrrication of the devices should
start immediately.
In preparation cor Operation TTLLRACE and the safety tests at the
Nevada Test Site, it has been necessary to Initiate construction
cE tunnets and to proceed with associated on-site construction as
well as labovatery planning
The scale cf preparation is, of
course, increasing with each passing week.

A series of five small diagnostic shots all imderground
starting in late fall.

the firing cf a device to meet a military need for a
