Fallout Exposure from a 1954 Bikini Weapons Test
(Contact: OIS)
The Brookhaven National Laboratory is mailing an announcement today
on the death of the 19 year old youth from the Marshall Islands who
was exposed to fallout from a 1954 Bikini weapons test. He died
yesterday at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Leukemia
was suspected at the time of the 1972 annual examination of Marshall
Islanders, carried out by Brookhaven for the AEC.
The young man was
returned here for confirmation of the diagnosis, and treatment.
During attempts at NIH to induce remission of his leukemia, he
developed pneumonia which eventually proved fatal.
