ENIWETOK MATTERS

On August 1, 1972, I was assigned the overall authority and
responsibility within the AEC for coordinating interagency and
intraagency matters related to the rehabilitation of the Eniwetok
Atoll. Our progress to date in this effert has revealed that there
are som watters involving niwetok which mey not have a direct or

apparent effect on the rehabilitation but which cam cause difficulties.

The experience has been that all AEC interests in Eniwetok Atoll, no

matter how resote from rehabilitation they may seex, have the potential
for playing a significant role in our actions in the rehabilitation
progran by creating misunderstandings or becoming involved in current
litigation involving the Departwent of Defense Pacific Area Cratering
Experiments.

In view of the abeve, 1 request that you ensure that all aatters

dealing with kniwetck are coordinated with the Test Office, Division
of Military
lication, prior to completing your various actions.
Your responsibilities and prerogatives will be respected and I
personally assure you no significant time will be lost in this
coordination.
