Dedication This report is dedicated to who was the Marshallese Mayor of Rongelap Village at the time of the fallout in 1954. is a quiet, unassuming man, well liked. and a respected leader of the Rongelap people. His family suffered extremely from the effects of the fallout. He and four members.of his family underwent surgery for removalof thyroid tumors. The tumorin his wife was malignant. His youngest son, who was oneyearof age at the time of the fallout, had a thyroid tumor removed at age 12 and later developedan acute form of leukemia when he was 19 years old. Although extensively treated in the United States, he died. His death was a cause of great grief to his family and to the Marshallese people. In spite of all these troubles, including evacuation from their homeisland and socioeconomic disruption, I have never heard express bitterness. However, he has continued to champion the cause of his people. I am grateful that he has always appreciated and supported the efforts of our medical team to help his people. He has remained a true friend over the years and I treasure his friendship. ‘ - KF Yoke ae a Bee toi. a (Left), Mayor of Rongelap in 1964 standing beside the oldest woman \ on n the island ritpepidilaaccas Ws - tee sph USEESapg hs feet Cas : “ ete Pes eg local ak thee bases ang meme fF OF a me Lea fay eorciast; i fie Haas. te rede em eh ee angela y Felt: ties -aiin& a iste aa the Givin ” ; nivel PR SB claBA ft AO tered necein tligien GhValageew., . ‘haptige PRIVACY ACT MATERIAL REMOVED FOCHIES
