OFPICE OF THE SECRETARY
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20240

JUL 9

1979

President Amata Kabua

Office of the President

Marshall Islands Government
Majuro, Marshall islands
96960
Dear President

Kabua:

This is a follow-up to my letter of June 15, 1979, to
Mr. Anton DeBrum, Secretary of Foreign Affairs with respect
to the proposed medical survey of the people of Likiep
Atoll.
We have been in constant contact with Department of Energy |
officials on this proposed survey.
The Assistant Secretary
for Environment, Mrs. Ruth C. Clusen, has informed us that
the Department of Energy is attempting to scnedule a visit
by the Brookhaven medical team to Likiep as soon as it is
feasible to do so.
We will keep you informed of
developments.
In

the meantime,

the

Department of

nergy has

asked

if

the

Department of the Interior could provide a list of those
people who were resident on the island during March 1954.
When Mr.

Anton

DeBrum,

Secretary of

Foreign Affairs,

raised

the question of a Likiep medical survey during his recent

visit to Washington, he indicated that he would undertake to
have such a list developed.
It would be appreciated if your

office could provide such a list as soon as possible for the
use of the Department of Energy.
sincerely

yours,

RUTH G. VAR GLiY!
