This is a follow-up to my letter of June 15, 1979, to
Mr. Anton DeBrum, Secretary of Foreign Affairs with respect
to the proposed medical survey of the people of Likiep
Atoll.
We have been in constant contact with Department of Energy |
officials on this proposed survey.
The Assistant Secretary
for Environment, Mrs. Ruth C. Clusen, has informed us that
the Department of Energy is attempting to scnedule a visit
by the Brookhaven medical team to Likiep as soon as it is
feasible to do so.
We will keep you informed of
developments.
In
the meantime,
the
Department of
nergy has
asked
if
the
Department of the Interior could provide a list of those
people who were resident on the island during March 1954.
When Mr.
Anton
DeBrum,
Secretary of
Foreign Affairs,
raised
the question of a Likiep medical survey during his recent
visit to Washington, he indicated that he would undertake to
have such a list developed.
It would be appreciated if your
office could provide such a list as soon as possible for the
use of the Department of Energy.
