Dr. Dixy Lee Ray
Chairman, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission

Washington, D.C. 20545

Dear Dr.

Ray:

As mentioned in my 7 June letter I have requested an aircraft for

the trip to Enewetak and Johnston Island.

The aircraft (AC-118) is

available for departure on 3 September.
I would propose the attached
itinerary.
If your schedule will permit I would suggest a joint trip

and would look forward to accompanying you.

I will also invite the

mens

appropriate officials from the Department of Interior and from the
Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (International Security
Affairs).
Your staff advises that prior to mid-August the Commission will
have established the radiological standards, enabling DNA to have
a draft environmental impact statement.
I believe appropriate officials
from AEC, DOL and DNA should accompany us to explain the DEIS and answer
questions about the cleanup. They should brief us personally either
prior to departure and/or on the aircraft enroute.
I do not propose that you and I expose ourselves to any

“confrontation.

However, I think it is important we show our

personal interest and a willingness to discuss the issues later

if appropriate, after all concerned have had an opportunity to work

out details and answer any questions.
