first opened, until heavy construction started
and traffic to and from the batch plant on
Eas‘ increased materially, single-lane roads were
adequate. In August 1953 approval was obtained
to widen these causeways to a minimum of 25
feet and to raise the elevation to plus 8.5 feet
in order to minitnize washouts at high tide.
This latter work was accomplished on a fill-in
basis, involving the least possible interference
with the Scientific Program.
