4582 Maryland Parkway WATER RESOURCES CENTER @ Desert Research Institute — University of Nevada System di November 2, Las Vegas, Nevada 89109 (702) 736-2293 1977 Commander, FCDNA (FCZ) Kirtland AFB, NM 87115 ey Dear Sir: I have examined carefully the draft Chairman's Report and the draft Minutes of the Runit Cleanup Conference held in Las Vegas 4-5 October, 1977. I have one exception to the Synopsized Minutes, regarding Item ll from the first day. The minutes indicate that subsurface sampling would consist of sidewall soil samples, one 5 cm increment in each 20 cm depth, instead of gamma scanning the sidewalls. However, my notes indicate that the gamma scanning of the sidewalls would at least be attempted, to see if the results were reliable enough to be useful. If so, then only the "hot spots" would need to be sampled, and if not, the technique would be dropped. The "5 cm-in-each-20 cm" incre- ment would be used to check the reliability of gamma scanning, oy =e and would become the primary sampling technique if the gamma scanning proved to be unusable. I find the remainder of the Minutes, and the Report, to be clear and accurate. lemme Sincerely, ce MB: cm Madaline Barnes Research Statistician Desert Research Institute eee ie a Water Resources Center Cnof IA bref,/ @ Energy and Atmospheric Environment Center Applied Ecology and Physiology Center @ Human Systems Center ®
