B. Keller, UCRL, had given special permission-to exceed the 200 mr. maximum recovery dosage ana, if necessary, get up to 500 mr., as this was an emergency recovery program and the instruments involved had to be retrieved that day before another scheduled event took place. A recovery was made in one station with a 15 to 20 minute exposure in a 250 mr/hr area. At the second station only three legs of a four-way-bridle Cargo Net containing the instruments could be secured, resulting in a cave-in of the sana bags anda neccessitating a longer stay in the area than anticipated. The party stayed approximately one-half hour in a 2,000 mr/hr field. The TU-6 Monitor advised on two occasions that the party should leave the area, but as they were progressing with the recovery satisfactorily, it was decicea py Mr. to complete the mission. The material that was placed in Mr. Mullin's Dukw was reading only 60 mr/hr ana Mr. left the Dukw immediately upon entering the T-boat for the return trip to Nan. It was further reported hv Mr. W Operator (apparently Mr. . . she TU-6 Monitor, that the Dukw , although it was difficult to identify the men because they were deckedout in complete protective clothing including respirators) could have received a higher dosage due to having his Dukw parked aown-wind from where the men were digging. It was the only place the Dukw coulda be parked so the driver could be handy to receive the delivery from the Cherry-picker. It was also reported that with every shovelfull of dirt raised, the needle on the Radiac instrument would advance considerably. WHM cet Asst.
