It will be noted that no evaluation has been made of the dose
due to P24 »
or other radionuclides mown to be present in vireo
even very brisfly as ceeuwrs in the case of nor-essimilated elements
peseing through the GI tract.
As far es whole bheGy irradiatioa is
eoncerned these radioisoteres are of secondary importance compared
with gromd fallout aad internal cs’ ana gp,
Ths mwethcdology deseribed and utilized in this work hes made
it possible to obtain a measure of the dose arising from gaume-emitting
Liesion ectivity on the ground.
Evaluation of the whole body dose
to man from such sources kas been made through the use of shielding
fectors applied to this gamma radiation.
Ths pressnt situation in
which nuclear weapons testing is no longer being carried ont vill
lesd to a genetic dose of 52 murads and a jifetbime dose of 62 mrads
to roughly one~half of the population of the tnited States, an increase
of approximately 1% over that arising from natural radiation.
The
continuous testing of nuclear weapons at the rate ocewring between
1954 and 1959 would reevlt in an inereese of the vhole body dose of
some 62 over thet occurring naturally.
