AEC ANNOUNCES DANGER AREA FOR ENIWETOK NUCLEAR TESTS
As part of the safety precautions for the forthcoming
nuclear tests at the Eniwetok Proving Ground,
the U.
S.
Atemic Energy Commission today issued public notice of the
danger area which will be established in the Pacific Ocean
effective April 5, 1958.
This notice is being given the widest possible distribution through marine, aviation, and international organizations.
The area is generally rectangular in shape and comprises
roughly 390,000 square nautical miles.
It is approximately
the same size as the danger area used in the 1956 test series,
but its east and west boundaries have been shifted approx-
imately 120 nautical miles to the west.
The Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Defense
have announced that the forthcoming test serles will advance
the development of weapons for defense against aggression
whether air-borne, missile~borne, or otherwise mounted.
Infor-
mation on the effects of weapons will be obtained for military
and civilian defense use.
An important objective of the tests
will be the further development of nuclear weapons with greatly
reduced radioactive fallout so that radiation hazard may be
restricted to the military target.
There will be a post operation radiological survey of the
danger area.
Although it is estimated that most,
if not all,
of the danger area will be disestablished during August 1958,
it is not now possible to set the exact date.
