STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1.

To determine to what extent the Department of Defense could undertake

“to assist the Atomic Energy Commission in the non-nuclear portion of the atomic
_weapons program, and to indicate the steps that should be taken to utilize most
efficiently the combined capabilities of the Atomic Energy Commission and the
“Department of Defense in the atomic weapons field.

INTRODUCTION

This report of the Joint AEC-DOD Study Group, hereinafter called the

Group, contains a presentation of programs and tasks in which the AEG contemplates militaryassistance, 4@ presontation of current and potential capabilitics
of the military to perform those tasks, and areas and tasks wherein the AEC

could use and the military oan give additional assistance.
For the purpose of this report, the Group oconstrues the non-nuclear

portion of any atomic weapon to comprise a11 components and gear exclusive of
the fissionablo material and the actual components necessary to obtain a
C3veloar explosion.

The nuclear portion would include the firing cirouit,

detonator cirouits, sphere case, H.E., pit, tamper, and nuclear capsule.
