SUBJECT: TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH CDR. CRONKITE

Commander Cronkite called this morning to let me know that there
is a probability that orders will be written for Naval personnel
now assigned to NRDL in connection with the investigations in
biological effects of ionizing radiation and that other work
requiring special experience and competences such as that we are
now getting from this group in carrying out the field test at
Nevada. Gene feels that if there is a requirement for this kind
of work in the future, the loss of this group would severely
handicap NMRI and NRDL in continuing investigations similar to
those carried out at GREENHOUSE and presently for us under
contract. He feels that in your letter to Admiral Pugh relative
to the work the Navy has been doing for the AEC, it would be
helpful and appropriate for you to include an expression on
the desirability of holding intact this group of Naval personnel

to act as a team in future biomedical studies.

This suggestion

is, of course, important to the AEC only if there is indicated
a need for future cooperation between the AEC and the Navy in
continuing investigations in the areas of their particular

competences in future test operations.

Gene will probably call you on this today or tomorrow.
