ENIWETOK RADIOLOGICAL SURVEY
To intorm the Conmission of current activities on

Kniwetok Atoll and of related historical and funding
data.
biscussion:

In connection with the announced intention of the
United States to return Eniwetok Atoil to the Trust
Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), the

Department of Interior (DOI}, Department of
Defense (DOD), and AEC nave developed a comprehensive
and coordinated program to carry out the necessary
aurvey, cleanup, and rehabiiitation efforts to
permit future resettlement of the atoll by the
Eniwetok people.
Eniwetok Atoll was designated a nuclear testing site
in i947 and used for such purpose from 1846 througi
1958.

The last of 43 tests was conducted in

July 1958, and all tests have teen listed publicly.
in early 1948, the Eniwetok people (original
number: 136; now: 432) were relocated to Ujelang
Atoli where they stiil reside.
&EC is responsible for conducting a radiclogical
survey, assessing tae results, and establishing

criteria and constraints for cleanup and rehabilitation,
involving other agencies, as appropriate.
Within

Headquarters, DBER, DOS, and AGMMA are each

reaponalble for specific parts of this overall AEC
responsibility. In the field, NVO is responsible
for conducting the radiolopical survey with the
supnort of Ichoretory and contractor personnel.
