a letter from Mr. Ataji L. Beles fo regard to the problems of
people in the Marshall Islands.
This letter is {dentical to a
letter dated April BB 1964, to the President ef the United States
which was referred to the Commission fer reply. The ansver te

The lest nuclear explesion in the Mershell Islands area took place
fim August 1955. Your assumtien that we ere not contemplating its
use even if atmospheric testing {s resumed is cerrect.
Jt should be acted, however, that the area in which Enivetok and
Bikini Atolls are lecated is am impact area fer the Pacific Missile
Range.
I understand that the Department of Defense has a continuing
f{nterest in this ares which may preclude allowing the native
population to return te these atolls for some time in the futures.
