This report describes a portable field device for lifting a high
ity gemma radiation source from its shield without expésing the
gerscone
1 involved to harmful radiation.
The device raises the radioactive source from its steel-jacketed
vena shield by air pressure.
First, a lead plug is removed from the
steld and replaced by @ stainless-steel plug containing two concentric
T
inum tudes that have an air-inlet hose near their base.
The air hose is
.connected to an electrically operated air compressor that forces air
~a the outer aluminum tube to the underside of the radioactive source,
e@ich is pushed upward into the inner aluminum tube. The radioactive source
‘ns suspended in the inner aluminum tube until power to the air compressor
¢g cucned off and the air pressure reduced.
The portable remotely operated device described above for producing
e ¢a8 radiation field performs satisfactorily.
High-level radiation
frelas can be produced with this system with very little exposure of test
gerscanel tc radiation,
