RADIOBIOLOGICAL RESURVEY OF BIKINI ATOLL
DURING THE SUMMER OF 1947.*
INTRODUCTION AND PRO3l.EM
The studies in radiobiology conducted ‘iring the resurvey of
Bikini Atoll,
in the summer of 1947, were contine2tions of some of
the studies initiated prior to, and immediately following the bomb
tests of 1946.
The 1947 studies were designed to determine:
(1)
the presence or absence of radiation in the various marine organisms;
{2) the distribution of radioactive substance in the plants and
animals from different geographical locations; and (3) the amounts
of radioactive substances in certain tissues and organs.
Some of the material was ashed, counted and analyzed in the
field but a large collection was also brought back to the University
of Washington for continuing studies.
Most of the collection includes
whole animals but.in some instances only tissue samples were preserved.
Personnel
The personnel for the Division of Radiobiology was made up of
the following group of men:
