Symptons and Signs in the Early Stage

Soon after the initial exposure most of the
patients experienced anorexia, fatigue and lach-

‘**Ba contributed 4-20% of radioactivity at that
time. The radioactivity decreased extremely
rapidly, ¢.g. at about 6 monthsafter the detonation, the activity in the urine was barely detectable. After 84 years, the levels of '’Cs in

rymation, etc.
These symptoms and
changes areillustrated in Fig. 1.

showed that, comparing with the controls, radioactivity of these organs was clearly higher, although it was not extremely high.'”
Whole body counting was performed on three
persons 8} years after the initial exposure. No
significant difference was found between the
curves of the three irradiated persons and the
curve of the control.

Clinical Observations
1. Symptoms and Signs

K-16 acute appendicitis (1957)
2.

Skin Lesions

Skin lesions occurred due to beta radiation.

An estimate of the radiation dose to the skin
was w:licult. Shortly after the exposure, they
suffeccd from erythema which was followed by
edema, vesicle, erosion, ulceration or necrosis.

* These were diagnosed by Dr. Kumatori. The
others were due to complaints of the patients.
