intent of sane is complied with. It is, however, ~ointed out thot
these vebsels will have completed a long trip fron Kw..jelein, their
compartments will heve been closed for long periods of time, “nd it
will be considered dengerousto enter such conp:rtnents without
adequxte test procedure, Tests first should be mode in the usual
monner for explosive hazards, then for the presente of cdequcte
amounts of oxygen, ond finally ‘for toxic gases end vt.ors. Cornartments in which such hazards sure discovered shall be thorou, hly
ventilsted prior to entry, care being taken to avoid spreading
radionctive contcainction by the process of ventilation, In ventlating a space, the primary cencern cust be to avoid stirring up
dust, The ships ventiletion systems shall not be used to accoaplish needed ventilation, nor shall vent sets or fen motors be
started for test purposes, If naturel ventilation is insufticient
to provide the required cir-change portable blowers may be rigzed,
Portable blowers, both exhaust end supply, should be operated so
as to produce the lowest air velocities necessary to chnge tne
cir in the compartment. In eny event personnel will go below only
when properly protected by adequate positive pressure mask or
rescue breathing spparatus end when working in pairs, une below
end one topside, while the blowers cre operating all hands shall
be ordered off -nd away fron the ship, or shall wear the rescue
breathing spparatus cr positive pressure Liask.

Fortable diesel sets or other power equipment
shali not be so placed on deck that its vibration moy cause dust
te fall in adjacent spoces below, or produce < dust hazard topside,
(c) another type of hazard which will be found
peculinr to damaged turget ships is that due to structural denage
of varicus kinds, Fersonnel should be on their guard constantiy
against fallin, u-teriai frou structure which has been further
weakened by the long trip from Kwajclein, Loose moterial may give
woy when 2 little additional weight is placed upon it. Ladders,

objects or sliding nu terials wey be present on deck caysing insecure
